Woman dies after fall into Chicago River near Lower Wacker and Michigan Avenue

December 17, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Emergency crews got a call about a woman walking along the south side of the river near the Michigan Avenue bridge early Tuesday.

Authorities say she slipped and fell into the icy water near Lower Wacker. Chicago Fire Department divers pulled her out at approximately 4:15 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police, the woman had been walking with a friend who flagged down a passing driver. That driver called police.

"They were walking down there by the water. I don't know who exactly fell in or jumped in," driver Hailey Barham said. "The girl was hysterical. So, we called police for her right away, and they came, and they pulled her out."

Barham said the friend told her that she and the woman who fell in were actually from out of town and were visiting Chicago and had gone out for the night. She reportedly said they were from Texas.

The woman is said to be in her 30s. She was in the water for about 30 minutes, officials said.
