Evan West suffered head trauma, broken bones and internal injuries. His wife Jamie was killed.
"Cute couple, really nice, nice people from a small town. Big hearts," said Brettly Kawaguchi, friend.
Police say they were hit by a drunk driver.
The two were from Indiana but lived in Rogers Park. Evan West worked at the Heartland Cafe before moving to Texas.
The fundraiser will help cover Evan West's medical bills. It's currently set for May 1.
