Stars showed off their best fashion on the CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet, but it was Beyonce's surprise appearance at the end of the show that had everyone talking.
The pop star, a surprise honoree, was given the Fashion Icon award at the annual ceremony held by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
"The image of a woman in charge has never looked more glamorous," said designer Diane von Furstenberg as she introduced the star.
Beyonce took to the stage in a sparkling pinstripe suit and wide-brimmed hat. She spoke about the history of fashion in her family, saying that her grandmother was a seamstress, and her mom and uncle made her first costumes for Destiny's Child.
"When we were starting out in Destiny's Child, high-end labels, they didn't really want to dress four black, country curvy girls," she said. "And we couldn't afford designer dresses and couture. My mother ... used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams."
The show also included a tribute to David Bowie from Tilda Swinton and a tribute to Prince from Jennifer Hudson. Other honorees included Marc Jacobs getting the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, Alessandro Michele of Gucci getting the International Award, and Norma Kamali getting the lifetime achievement award.
