NEW ORLEANS (WLS) -- Francis Cardinal George is in New Orleans Tuesday night for a conference also attended by the bishop who will succeed him. He just doesn't know who that is yet.

The process of choosing the cardinal's successor is underway. Part of that involves the cardinal sending the pope his assessment of the Chicago archdiocese, its challenges and successes, which he's already done. Now his fellow bishops will weigh in, saying who they believe would be best for the job.

"it is confidential yes but everyone has his own list," said ??? "You can talk to others they'll probably say and anybody's invited to write."

The Vatican's ambassador, the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano compiles those lists. He will then narrow it down to three finalists.

The final decision is made by Pope Francis, and could come before the end of this year.

For Cardinal George, it's been more than a month now since his last chemo treatment, and while he says he's feeling good, he knows that may not last.

"I'll have to probably go back on chemo or some other form of treatment," he said. "I'll know in two weeks. But in the meantime I'm enjoying myself and I'm very grateful for every day."
