CSU rally held after layoff notices sent

CHICAGO -- Dozens of students from Chicago's South Side walked out of class Friday showing support for Chicago State University.

Fenger High School students say they also walked out in support of teachers and Chicago Public Schools.

CPS and Chicago State are reeling from a lack of money coming from Springfield.

Students say they want to bring attention to voting, encouraging the youth to vote politicians into office they believe can help them.

Chicago State University's Board of Trustees met Friday morning to discuss the institution's financial situation.

The university, which is on the verge of closure due to a lack of state funding, says it now has enough money to pay employees through the end of the school year. Pink slips were recently handed out to more than 800 faculty, staff and administrators.

CSU canceled spring break in order to try and finish out the school year, and moved up the graduation date to reduce operating costs.

The college, located on the city's South Side, is still hoping for money from the state.
