CTA project would close 2 Red Line stations for at least 3 years
Closures required for the CTA's Red and Purple Line modernization project would affect some North Side riders for at least three years.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The CTA plans to rebuild several stations along the Red and Purple lines as part of a modernization project. But the closures required for the project would affect some North Side riders for at least three years.

The stations affected are more than 100 years old and in desperate need of rebuilding.

When reconstruction is complete, Red and Purple line stations would include new elevators, wider platforms, more benches and wider canopies to protect commuters from the elements. The CTA also plans to rebuild track infrastructure, bridges and viaducts as part of the project.

According to reports, the Berwyn and Lawrence stations in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood would be the only stations to close during the initial 18-month construction period starting in 2017. The Thorndale, Bryn Mawr, Argyle and Wilson stations along the Red Line would remain open.

The Berwyn and Lawrence stations will remain closed for the second phase of construction, which is expected to last between 18 and 24 months. During that time, the Argyle station would also shut down and the Bryn Mawr stop would only be open to southbound riders. A temporary stop will be open at Foster and Winona to accommodate commuters.

Reports did not indicate how the closures would affect commute times.

The CTA is waiting for approval on federal funding to carry out the project.
