Rapping teacher from Chicago gears up for new school year
CHICAGO (WLS) -- About a year ago, teacher Dwayne Reed welcomed students back to school with a rap music that went viral.
The first-year teacher at a Skokie school came up with the catchy song to replace the standard letter.
"I was going to be a student teacher so I hadn't been licensed yet and that was a practice go to end all practice goes," said Reed.
Reed will teach full-time at Learn Campbell Charter School in East Garfield Park when school starts. And yes, he does have a new video that he is now sending to his students.
In the last year, Reed finished his semester of student teaching and started an after-school music program.
"My goal with this after school program is they can have fun while doing the things they have to do, so I kind of married rap music with academics and showed them learning can be fun take ownership of this," Reed said.
He plans to make music a big part of his language arts class.
"I do plan on bringing music into the classroom during transition," Reed said. "Music is so powerful, it's gotten me to this place. Will be excited to see where it takes my students."
