Elawa Farm offers fresh produce and food on the go
Elawa Farm offers fresh produce, flowers and food to go at its location in Lake Forest.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (WLS) -- The Armour family never built a home here, but the barn on their "gentleman's farm" sure had some good bones. Good enough that Lake Forest cobbled together the money to preserve this 16-acre facility, naming it Elawa Farm.

"We have a garden with flowers and fresh produce that we grow, and we combine that with programming in the market," said Head Gardener Jesse Rosenbluth.

Part of that programming means cooking classes, but chef Mary McMahon - a veteran of restaurants like Vivere and Trio - uses whatever they grow here to create delicious items to go. Fresh salads, personal pizzas, eggy quiches and home-baked bread are just a few of the regular items offered. Her pastry training shows in her fabulous seasonal pies, moist scones and chocolate cookies. In the market, they also sell dozens of dressings, jams and spreads, as well as fresh pea hummus and tons of flowers to decorate your table.

"And the proceeds from the market support all of the programming here, from cooking classes, photography and art classes to children's programming," Rosenbluth said.

You can come buy produce, flowers or food to go at Elawa Farm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. But if you can't wait until you get home, just pull up a bench, find a spot of grass, have a snack and enjoy the scenery.

Elawa also has cooking classes and hosts special events at the farm during the week.
