CHICAGO -- The mother of Fredrick Maxwell says that he was beaten by police on Thursday near the Lawless Garden apartments. Police say he had cocaine on him.

Debra Robinson says that her son was leaving his girlfriend's apartment when he saw that police had surrounded the building. She says that Maxwell ran because he is currently on probation. Robinson alleges that police stomped on her son's leg, causing it to break in two places. She says that he is currently in the hospital in good condition.

According to the Chicago Police Department, Maxwell was arrested on around 7 p.m. on Thursday and charged with one felony count of cocaine possession and eight counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Police say they had responded to a call about a person with a gun in the area and, while looking for that person, found Maxwell to be in possession of drugs. They say they placed him into custody and that he requested to go to the hospital.
