CHICAGO (WLS) -- In northwest Indiana, eight alleged members and associates of a violent street gang have been indicted on charges of a racketeering conspiracy spanning more than 20 years.

Authorities say the street gang originated in Chicago and crimes were committed on both sides of the state line. They say Friday's action reflects the continuing efforts to free communities within East Chicago, Gary and Chicago from gang violence and drug dealing.

"Our two prosecutors' offices along with our colleagues at the Justice Department are completely in sync. We are working together to stop the flow of drugs and guns from Indiana to Chicago and back," said Zach Fardon, U.S. Attorney Northern District Illinois.

Federal authorities assisted law enforcement in Chicago and northwest Indiana on this case.
