Record-breaking wooden coaster Goliath opens at Six Flags on Thursday
GURNEE, Ill. (WLS) -- Thrill-seekers will soon experience the twists and turns of Six Flags Great America's newest roller coaster "Goliath."
The record-breaking ride is scheduled to open to the public on Thursday at the Gurnee theme park. The media and some lucky roller coaster enthusiasts like Matt Clark got a sneak peak on Wednesday.
Clark gave Goliath an A.
"The zero G stall was an absolutely phenomenal move and to do two of them, you can't beat it," he said.
Goliath is the world's tallest, steepest and fastest wooden roller coaster. The new attraction peaks at 165 feet and plummets 180 feet at a near vertical 85-degree angle. The 90 second thrill ride reaches speeds of 72 miles per hour.
"This is all new innovative wooden roller coaster technology," Six Flags spokesperson Katy Enrique said. "The track is smoother and the wheels are urethane. So it's a very smooth ride."
Nick Burian gave some surprising advice about where the sweet spot is on Goliath.
"Usually front and back is good," Burian said. "But if you want to get some air time, the middle. We rode it the second time and found a really good hang time spot. So that seems to be the spot to be in right now."
