"We had some challenges there that we had to work through," said Dr. Darrell Cass, a pediatric surgeon.

Thirteen doctors spent 16 hours in the operating room. The doctors separated Hope and Faith's chest wall, lungs, lining of their heart, diaphragm, liver, intestines and pelvis. Last month, the twins' mother shared her wish for her girls and her family.

"I want them to have a shot at having a normal life. I'm looking forward of just going home and dressing them in tutus and bows and pink and purple and ribbon and I'm just excited," Elysse Mata said.

The twins are resting at Texas Children's Hospital.
