NORTHBROOK, Ill. (WLS) -- A highway safety effort underway Monday honors an Illinois state trooper who died in the line of duty.
James Sauter was killed three years ago on Monday when a tractor trailer truck hit his patrol car in suburban Cook County.
The Wisconsin trucker fell asleep at the wheel and is now in prison.
"Operation Sauter" has state police checking logs through the day, to make sure truckers are documenting the hours they drive.
The man who hit Sauter's squad had been on the road longer than the 14-hour limit.
