Dad takes juvenile to police to turn him in for robbery, kidnapping

LOS ANGELES -- A father took his son to a Los Angeles police station on Tuesday, after the teen confessed to a violent attempted robbery and kidnapping in Koreatown.

Los Angeles police released photos of the suspect on surveillance video earlier in the day. It didn't take long for the suspect to see himself on the news and confess to his father, police said. He was not identified, as he is a juvenile.

"His dad brought him down here to the station, very emotional for the dad, but obviously doing the right thing. The son did the right thing by turning himself in," LAPD Lt. Jonathan Tom said.

He was taken into custody.

The suspect was accused of using a ladder to climb into an apartment building in the 400 block of Westmoreland Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. July 22. Armed with a knife, he entered the victim's apartment through an unlocked sliding door and demanded money, police said.

The victim said he didn't have any and the suspect then allegedly ordered the victim to drive to an ATM and withdraw money. They walked to the apartment building's garage, where the victim's car was parked.

When the victim saw that the suspect had put the knife away, he fought back and they wrestled over the knife. The suspect managed to break free and swung at the victim before fleeing the scene, police said.

The suspect may be charged with attempted kidnapping and attempted robbery.
