National Guard troops traveling from Texas to Illinois Monday, DOJ lawyers confirm
Department of Justice lawyers confirmed that a flight of National Guard troops from Texas are expected to travel to Illinois on Monday afternoon.
The troops are expected to board a 4 p.m. flight, the lawyers said during a Monday afternoon hearing for a lawsuit seeking to block President Donald Trump's federalization and deployment of the Guard.
DOJ lawyers said those troops are expected to be "deployed or in position by tomorrow or Wednesday" but offered no specific details on how those troops would be used, or what cities they would be deployed to. Judge April Perry, a President Joe Biden appointee, found this "troubling."
The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago asked Perry to issue an order blocking any state's National Guard from being federalized and deployed to Illinois, arguing the state is being targeted because their "leadership has fallen out of a president's favor."
The plaintiffs sought a temporary restraining order -- similar to what a different judge issued over the weekend to prevent the deployment of the National Guard to Portland.
But until oral arguments take place on Thursday, Perry would not issue a TRO or stay on the troops' arrival. Click here for more.
