Federal agents appear to detain landscaping company employees in Lake County

Video shows what appears to be federal agents taking landscaping company employees into custody in Lake County, Illinois.

The company said at least one of those arrested had documents that were in order.

ABC7 blurred the face of the person being detained because it is not clear if they are charged.

ABC7 reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Judge orders ICE field director to testify, Operation Midway Blitz agents to wear body cameras

DHS attorney says not all ICE, CBP agents have been issued body cameras, cites gov. shutdown as challenge.

A federal judge ordered the Chicago ICE field director to appear in court next week regarding several incidents.

In court on Thursday, federal Judge Sara Ellis, who issued a temporary restraining order, or TRO, on federal agents' use of tear gas and other crowd control methods last week, said she is "deeply concerned" with apparent violations.

The judge ordered Chicago ICE Field Office Director Russell Hott to appear in court on Monday to answer questions about several incidents where violations were alleged.

Judge Ellis also modified the TRO, now requiring all agents working under Operation Midway Blitz, including agents with ICE and CBP who have already been issued body cameras, to wear them and keep them on during "law enforcement activities" in Chicago.

Skedzieiewski added that not all agents have been issued body-cameras, including in the Chicago Area of Responsibility.

CBP agents may have been issued body-cams under a different program, and since CBP agents are here, the attorney said they may have access to, and have already been trained on when to activate their cameras.

Given the government shutdown, the government's attorney said rolling out a costly program like this would be challenging.

Agents tackle US citizen after East Side immigration operation leads to crash, spills into Walgreens

A federal operation on Chicago's East Side led to a crash, followed by a pursuit, before the situation eventually spilled over into a nearby Walgreens.

That is where 19-year-old South Side native Warren King says he was shopping with friends and family before he was tackled and arrested.

The takedown by immigration officers was recorded outside a Walgreens store as loved ones pled for his release.

King's relative can be heard saying in the video, "He's a citizen! He's a citizen!"

ABC7 blurred his face during the arrest since he faces no charges.

"You don't know what's going on, so get the *** back!" an agent can be heard saying in the video.

It happened after federal agents were seen swarming the store, appearing to be in search of someone.

"And, when he called for backup, other people come in, and that's when I start to leave," King said.

But King says he did not get far from the exit before being tackled to the ground by a federal agent and placed under arrest. He is now left with both physical and mental scars.

"He was just saying, 'Why are you running?'" King said. "But I'm telling him, 'I'm a U.S. citizen. I'm here. I'm legal. I'm born here.' So, they didn't try to hear none of that, though."

It all apparently stemmed from a collision, captured on video, at the nearby intersection of 105th and Avenue N. Click here for more.

FBI reassignments to immigration enforcement may impact counterterrorism, corruption investigations

Nearly 25% of FBI agents are now working on immigration enforcement, according to numbers provided by the FBI to Sen. Mark Warner's office. But those numbers get even higher when looking at some of the biggest field offices around the country: up to 45% of those FBI agents are working on President Donald Trump's immigration push.

As operation "Midway Blitz" continues in Chicago, and more federal agents are deployed around the country to Democratic cities, prompting large public outcry, the ABC7 I-Team has learned 23% of FBI agents nationwide have been tasked with immigration enforcement. Traditionally, the FBI investigates foreign spies, terrorism, cyberattacks and transnational gangs.

"My concern is that if you're moving agents away from those vital responsibilities to engage in civil immigration enforcement, you're going to see a decrease in the number of FBI investigations in those areas and an increase in the threat to the country," former Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism John Cohen told the I-Team.

He says there is a finite number of law enforcement resources working on complex public safety investigations.

"If FBI agents aren't working on Joint Terrorism Task Forces, then there are fewer terrorism investigations. If FBI agents are not working on drug gang task forces, then there are fewer investigations into violent street gangs and drug trafficking cartels," Cohen said.

And with such a large contingent pulled from their duties, he says drug cartels and bad actors are watching. Click here for more.
