CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

75-year-old woman shot in Little Village, Chicago police say

A 75-year-old woman was struck in a Little Village shooting, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened in the 2300-block of Sacramento Avenue on Saturday around 8:05 p.m.

Police said a man and woman, both 75 years of age, were standing outside when heard the gunfire.

The man's foot was grazed by a bullet. The woman was shot in the ankle. Both are expected to be okay.

No one in custody. Area Four Detectives are investigating.

2 teens die after being shot on South Side, police say

Two teenage boys died after being shot Saturday on the city's South Side.

The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. in the 4800 block of South Winchester Avenue, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Chicago police said. The victims were in front of a house when an unknown vehicle drove by and someone inside pulled out a firearm and began to shoot at them, police said.

A 15-year-old male victim was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, initially reported to be in critical condition, police said. He was later pronounced dead. A 17-year-old male victim was shot in the arm and armpit and was also taken to Comer in critical condition, police said. He was also later pronounced.

The identities of the victims were not immediately known.

Emotional family could be seen outside Comer Children's Hospital Saturday night. ABC7 saw a massive police presence at the scene of the shooting, with the street remaining shut down for hours.

Police have not shared a motive behind the shooting as they continue to investigate. Police say no one has been arrested.

No further information about the shooting was immediately available.

3 men shot, 1 critically injured, in Austin, CPD says

Three men were shot, one critically in the city's South Austin neighborhood on Saturday, Chicago police said.

This happened just after midnight in the 5000-block of West Madison on the West Side.

Investigators said a group of people got out of a white sedan and began shooting at another vehicle. Police said a man, 33, in a moving vehicle was shot in the thigh. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

A 43-year-old man who was standing nearby sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was transported to Loretto Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

A third man, 51, was was also standing outside and sustained a gunshot wound to the torso and leg. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in serious condition.
