CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.
"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."
While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Two teens were shot, one fatally, while sitting on a South Side porch on Saturday night, police said.
Police said the shooting happened in the West Englewood neighborhood's 6700-block of South Loomis Street at about 9:20 p.m.
A 17-year-old boy, struck in the stomach and back, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died, police said. A 16-year-old boy, shot in the chest, was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
No one is in custody.
A man was shot after a crash on the city's West Side, according to CPD.
The shooting happened around 1:08 a.m. in the 500-block of Damen Avenue on Sunday.
The victim, a 21-year-old man, crashed with the driver of a black truck.
The driver of the black truck reportedly started shooting at the 21-year-old.
The victim was shot in the head, shoulder, and cheek, police said. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The black truck fled the scene westbound. No one in custody.
COPA said the shooting happened near the 1800-block of South Blue Island Avenue in the Pilsen neighborhood near Loomis Street on Sunday
Officers heard multiple shots fired around 1:16 a.m. and encountered armed suspects, according to Chicago police.
Two CPD officers fired their weapons and shot a man, who police said had a gun. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he later died.
A woman and another man were also shot on Sunday.
Chicago police said the suspect had reportedly shot the two victims inside a car before officers arrived.
Both were taken to the hospital with critical injuries, police said.
