CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Bystander shot in attempted carjacking in Fernwood: CPD

A man was shot on Sunday evening in the city's Fernwood neighborhood, according to Chicago police

The shooting happened in the 700-block of W. 107th Street around 7:24 p.m.

A man, 58, was getting out of his car when the suspect pulled out his gun to demand the car, according to police.

At one point the suspect shot and struck a 63-year-old man who was walking nearby.

The 63-year-old was shot in the groin and is expected to be okay.

The suspect was in apprehended by CPD. Area Two Detectives are investigating.

2 injured in Washington Park shootout involving off-duty Lyons police sergeant: Chicago police

Two people were injured in shootout involving an off-duty suburban police sergeant at a South Side park on Saturday evening, Chicago police said.

Police said the shootout happened during a gathering at Washington Park in the 5100-block South Ellsworth Drive just after 7 p.m.

A male offender of an unknown age was arguing with an off-duty Lyons Police Department sergeant, police said. That's when the offender took out a weapon, and the law enforcement officer identified himself as a sergeant.

Police said both the offender and the off-duty sergeant fired shots.

The offender, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, took himself to a local hospital in serious condition, police said. He has been stabilized.

Police said a 46-year-old woman, who was in the park when the gunfire broke out, suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Area detectives and the Investigative Response Team are investigating. Authorities did not immediately provide further information about the shootout.

Man shot in the leg in Lawndale, police say

A man was shot while standing outside on the city's West Side on Sunday, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened around 12:43 a.m. in the 4800-block of Lexington Street in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The 35-year-old was standing outside when he was shot in the leg.

At last check he was if expected to be okay. No one in custody.

Man critically injured in West Town drive-by shooting: CPD

A man was shot around 1:19 a.m. of the first day of September, according to Chicago police.

The drive-by shooting happened in the 1000-block of West Lake Street on Sunday.

A man, 34, was outside when he was shot at by an offender who was traveling in a gray sedan, a witness told police.

The victim was shot in the head and taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

No one in custody.
