Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.
"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."
While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

16-year-old boy shot, killed in Little Village, Chicago police say
A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Friday night in Little Village, Chicago police said.
Officers found the teen on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back near 24th and Trumbull at around 11:22 p.m., police said.
The boy died at the hospital, police said.

3 men shot while in parked car in Englewood, Chicago police say
Three men were hit by gunfire while sitting inside a parked car Friday night in Englewood, Chicago police said.
At about 10:48 p.m., two people came up to the vehicle near 60th and Princeton and opened fire, police said.
All three victims are hospitalized in good condition.

Man fatally shot, another critically wounded during fight in Gage Park, Chicago police say
One man is dead and another is in critical condition in a shooting in Gage Park, Friday night.
Chicago police said this happened during a fight between the two men at around 8:13 p.m. near 55th and Spaulding.

Woman shot to death inside Washington Heights home, police say
A woman was shot and killed on the city's South Side on Tuesday morning, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The shooting happened near 101st Street and Aberdeen Street in Washington Heights neighborhood.
Around 4:31 a.m. police said someone outside the house started shooting.
At least one of the bullets hit a37-year-old woman in the chest who was inside a house. The woman died at the scene.
No other injuries were reported. No one was arrested.
Chicago police are investigating the shooting as a homicide.
