CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Man shot to death in Portage Park: Chicago police

A man was fatally shot on the city's Northwest Side early Saturday morning, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Portage Park neighborhood's 5600-block of West Addison Street around 4:15 a.m.

A person in a black sedan dropped off a 20-year-old man who had been shot in his right hip, police said.

The victim was listed in critical condition and later died.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown.

No one in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Man shot to death inside vehicle in Fernwood: Chicago police

A man was shot to death inside a vehicle on Chicago's South Side on Friday night, police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Fernwood neighborhood's 10600-block of South State Street just after 10:30 p.m.

A 35-year-old man was sitting in a parked vehicle with a female of an unknown age when a male approached them on foot and fired shots, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department transported the victim, shot in the head, to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later identified him as Marzelle C. Moore.

There is no one in custody and Area Two detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Man, 24, fatally shot during after fight in River North, Chicago police say

A man was shot and killed early Saturday in the busy River North neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Police said the victim got in a fight with someone who pulled out a gun and shot him at around 3:40 a.m. on Hubbard near State Street.

The victim died at the hospital.

15-year-old boy seriously injured in shooting at Lakeview's Hamlin Park: Chicago police

A teenage boy was shot and seriously injured at a North Side park on Friday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened at Hamlin Park in the Lakeview neighborhood's 3000-block of North Hoyne Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.

A 15-year-old boy was in the park when two armed males approached him and took out guns, police said. At least one of the suspects fired at least one shot at the victim, striking him in the back.

The victim was transported to Lurie Children's Hospital in serious condition.

The suspects fled the scene.

There is no one in custody, and area detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
