Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

2 shot in Little Italy, police say

Two people were shot while sitting in a car in Little Italy, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened at about 1:59 a.m. in the 1300 block of S. Loomis Street.

Police said two victims were in a car when someone in a vehicle started to shoot at them.

A 25-year-old woman was shot in the head and the right leg. She was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

A 25-year-old man was also rushed to the hospital in serious condition after being shot in the chest.

No one in custody.

16-year-old boy shot by bullet that came through window at Austin home: Chicago police

A 16-year-old boy was injured when a bullet came through a window in his Austin home Wednesday night, Chicago police said.

A Chicago shooting injured a teen inside his North Lorel Avenue home in Austin, CPD says. The bullet came through a window, police said.

Chicago police responded to the 600-block of North Lorel Avenue just before 10:45 p.m. for a report of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found the teen with a gunshot wound to the hip inside his home.

CPD said the bullet that hit him came through a window. It was not immediately clear what led up to the shooting.

The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.

No one is in custody Thursday, and Area Four detectives are investigating.

Armed suspect shot after security guard pistol-whipped at South Shore Family Dollar store: CPD

An armed man was shot and critically injured outside a Family Dollar store on Chicago's South Side on Tuesday evening, police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the South Shore neighborhood's 2300-block of East 79th Street just after 7:15 p.m.

Three offenders wearing face coverings entered the store, police said. One of them took out a gun and pistol-whipped an unarmed security guard in the face.

Police said the group was running away when someone outside of the store took out a gun and shot one of them, a 60-year-old man, in the chest.

The 60-year-old suspect was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Officers recovered a gun from the man, and he is in police custody at the hospital.

That shooter, along with the other two suspects, got away.

Charges are pending, and detectives are still looking for the other three people involved.

Area Two detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information.

14-year-old boy shot inside vehicle in Homan Square, Chicago police say

A teen boy was shot inside a vehicle on Chicago's West Side on Monday night.

Police said the shooting happened in the Homan Square neighborhood's 3400-block of West Grenshaw Street around 8:15 p.m.

A 14-year-old boy was sitting inside a parked vehicle when someone, identified only as male, fired shots, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department transported the victim, shot in the leg, to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

There is no one in custody and Area Four detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
