CHICAGO (WLS) -- 'Put the Guns Down', a new violence prevention initiative in Chicago, kicked off Friday with DJs from across the city.

"Doing this thing also, guys we want everybody to put the guns down. This is a part of the mayor's campaign to bond with radio stations and radio hosts around the city. WVON is on board," Matt McGill said.

McGill is one of the radio personalities working on the initiative with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The announcement comes after several violent weekends and a bloody night in Chicago. Since 5 p.m. Thursday, at least 15 people were shot across the city.

McGill said the mayor recently called a meeting with DJs form urban stations to help city hall get the anti-gun message out.

"The summertime is right around the corner. We don't want a violent summer so we're going to try to put the message out to put the guns down," McGill said.
