CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city is now accepting nominations for Chicago's official Christmas tree for 2014.

Once chosen, the tree will be transported to downtown, where it will be the centerpiece of The Daley Plaza holiday display. The owners of the winning tree will also get the chance to "flip the switch" and light the tree during the week of Thanksgiving.

There are a few rules:

Trees must be at least 55 feet tall.

Spruce or fir trees are best. Pine trees are ineligible, since they are not sturdy enough.

Trees must be located within 100 miles of the Loop.

All submissions must include three photographs: one from afar and two up close.

The nomination must include the owner's name, address and contact information.

Applicants are also encouraged to briefly explain why the tree they are nominating should be Chicago's Christmas tree, as well as include its age and history.

Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 26. Chicago's 101st Christmas tree will be announced in late October.

Tree nominations can be submitted to dcase@cityofchicago.org or by mail:
