SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- A new law in Illinois extends the statute of limitations for rape kit testing.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed the bill Tuesday

There is a backlog of rape kits that are untested. Until the new law, the 10-year statute of limitations began when the crime was reported. Now, the legal clock now starts when the kit is actually tested. That gives authorities more time to investigate and possibly bring charges.
