Pregnant woman barely missed by bullet while driving

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A pregnant woman was driving in the city's Washington Park neighborhood near East 59th Street and South Indiana Avenue when a bullet came through her back windshield and lodged inches away from her in her passenger headrest.

Jasmine Austin was driving home from her job at the University of Chicago Hospital when the back window of her car was blown out. The bullet missed her by a foot or so.

"I just waiting at the stoplight, waiting for it to turn green, heard the first shot, didn't really think that it was near me. Then I head the second shot and just so happened it went through my back window and hit the headrest up on the passenger side, so. I'm a little shaken up," she said.

Austin said she is eight weeks pregnant. She was the only person in the car the time.

Just blocks away, a boy was shot multiple times and critically injured.

Police said the two suspects who opened fire on that teen left the scene in a silver sedan. Austin also drives a silver sedan, begging the question of whether that bullet could have been fired in a case of mistaken retaliation.

For Austin, it all just seemed so senseless.

"This is where I work, people live, children grow up," she said.
