CHICAGO (WLS) -- Most people may not think so, but taking selfies has actually been more deadly than shark attacks this year.

So far in 2015, 12 people have died worldwide while taking pictures of themselves. There have been eight deadly shark attacks this year.

Usually, the "selfie" accidents involve people falling or not noticing other dangers as they try to snap their own picture.

Some governments are launching campaigns to educate people on the dangers of taking selfies in potentially hazardous spots.
