THIRD LAKE, Ill. (WLS) -- The 16-year-old boy who drowned in Third Lake in the far north suburbs has been identified at Matt Reed, a rising junior at Grayslake Central High School, according to the Daily Herald.

Reed was swimming with six friends near a pontoon boat when he began to struggle and went under. An individual on the boat called 911.

Emergency crews arrived just after 4 p.m. Monday, and spent several hours searching the lake. They found him using sonar just after 6:45 p.m., about 60 feet below the surface. Divers recovered his body.

"It's very shocking, very surreal," Third Lake resident Mario Villanueva said. "It's a good bunch of kids just hanging around and having fun, and then a tragedy happens."

"I can't even imagine what his family is going through," Third Lake resident Jeanne Hendrickson said. "I also think about the other kids that were with him, and the guilt and the sadness they're all going to go through."

The body of water, one of two lakes within the village of Third Lake, is a private lake that is gated and locked.
