DETROIT -- A picture of a Detroit police officer helping a young crash victim is getting attention across the country.

It shows Lieutenant Joe Tucker stopping to comfort the young victim of a crash.

10-year-old Johntez Byrd was injured and lying in the road.

The officer says his fatherly instincts kicked in immediately.

Lt. Tucker says, "Neighbors were tending to the other children, and the young man was still sort of alone. So he was crying and nervous, so I laid down next to him."

Johntez had a message of lt. Tucker, saying, "Thanks for helping me up on the ground. Thanks for letting me play on his iPhone."

Lieutenant Tucker was off-duty when he stopped to help.

He is a 22-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department.
