Police shoot and wound man in Austin

May 11, 2014 (WLS) -- A man is in critical condition after police shot him early Sunday morning in the city's Austin neighborhood after he allegedly pulled a gun on the officers.

Police responded to a disturbance call in the 5400 block of West Madison around 2:30 a.m. The officers noticed a group gathered at that location, and that one of the subjects had a handgun. That offender allegedly placed the gun in his waistband and began to flee, police said.

As the officers approached the offender, police said the offender pointed the firearm at them. One officer discharged his weapon, striking the offender.

"The offender has the gun now in his waistband, he's running, the officer reaches out and grabs the offender, the offender's turning around and he's pulling the gun out on the officer at this point, and the officer fires and hits him several times," said Pat Camden, Fraternal Order of Police.

Police recovered a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the scene.

The offender was placed into custody and transported to Loyola Medical Center. Officers were not injured in the incident.
