CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police fatally shot a man in the city's Washington Park neighborhood just after midnight Sunday.

Police were investigating a shots-fired call in the 5300-block of South King Drive and they say when they arrived, a suspect ran and then pointed a gun at officers.

They shot and killed 25-year-old Ronald Johnson. Witnesses say he did not have a gun.

His family said he never got into trouble with the law.

"I'm still lost for words because they took my baby," said Johnson's mother, Dorothy Holmes.

Johnson had five children ranging from 1 to 7 years old.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
