HARVEY, Ill. (WLS) -- The Village of Harvey has settled several lawsuits that accuse officials in the south suburb of mishandling rape investigations for years.
The victims claimed police at times failed to submit rape kit evidence or take basic reports.
In addition to payouts to victims the settlement requires Harvey to increase police officer training on how to handle sex assaults. Officers will also learn how to properly report rape statistics to state police.
Lawyers for the victims say this will help stop repeat offenders.
Harvey's spokesperson says the suburb is hopeful the settlement will bring some closure and comfort to the victims involved in these cases.
