CHICAGO (WLS) -- Conner Lowry was 24 years old when he was killed while serving in Afghanistan.

His mother says she spent the next year in a 'walking nightmare.' She has since funneled her loss into advocacy.

Modie Lavin is now a family outreach coordinator for the 'Road Home Program' at Rush University Medical Center, which works to help veterans and their families.

We talked with her about this work and how she made the decision to work with veterans.

For more information, visit www.roadhomeprogram.org.

The Road Home Program's Annual fundraising dinner is Tuesday, June 6 at the Four Seasons Hotel. The keynote speaker is James H. Mukoyama, Jr., Major General, United States Army Retired.
