2 teens, including activist's nephew, shot in Englewood

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police say two teenagers, including the nephew of anti-violence community activist Andrew Holmes, were shot Thursday afternoon at 67th and Lafayette in Englewood.

Police say Marquis Stewart, 16, and a 15-year-old female classmate were walking on Marquette Road when a gunman shot them. Stewart was shot in the chest and is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. The female victim was shot in the shoulder and arm and is in stable condition.

Andrew Holmes is a community activist. His mission is to stop the shootings on the streets of Chicago. He's been to dozens of crime scenes - today, however, he did not realize when he showed up that the victim was his nephew.

Marquis Stewart is in surgery. As Andrew Holmes always pleads, anyone with information should call Chicago Police - this time, for Holmes, it is personal.

Like so many shootings, Andrew Holmes heard two teens were shot and rushed to the scene near the Dan Ryan.

"This is the destruction we try to stop," Holmes says, "but as usual, I'm not stopping."

It is his life's work, his mission. He's fighting to end violence. The latest victim is Holmes 16-year-old nephew, Marquis Stewart. He was shot in the chest.

"I don't wish this on no one," he says, "to sit inside this emergency room, even though I sit here day in and day out, even with my own family members."

Holmes says a dispute may have started at Dunbar High, where his nephew is a student.

Tonight, Holmes wiped a tear and collected himself. At the scene, he says he watched the ambulance pull away not knowing it was his nephew.

"I speak with him about violence," he says, "but you know, at times you can say what you want to say to any individual, whether it's a relative or not, but it's do they get it up here and down here?'
