CHICAGO (WLS) -- Several Illinois colleges and thousands of students are facing an uncertain future because of the state's budget impasse.

Chicago State University is sending out layoff notices warning employees and has already cancelled spring break to shorten the school year and ensure students can finish the semester.

At Northeastern Illinois University, Moody's downgraded the school's credit rating. And students at some of these schools wonder - will their university close? And what does that do to their plans for the future?

Talking about the impact the budget impasse is having in the short term and what it could mean for years to come is President Sharon Hahs from Northeastern Illinois University and Chicago State President Thomas Calhoun.
