CHICAGO (WLS) -- Metra adjusted its schedule to accommodate Cubs fans returning from the Chicago Cubs parade and rally in downtown Chicago.

Trains departed stations immediately when filled. The goal is to make sure trains are full before leaving the station even if it means altering the schedule.

The crush of people returning to the suburbs after the celebration had cleared out by 7 p.m.

Metra officials said Friday is one of the highest ridership days in its history. Metra was offering a one-day $5 unlimited ride ticket for fans going downtown to the rally.

"It was very cramped," said commuter Vieter Villegas.

Metra released an alert Friday advising commuters wait for the crowded stations to die down and spend more time in the city.

"In celebration of the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs festivities, our downtown stations are very crowded. Please consider spending some time enjoying the beautiful weather and all that Chicago has to offer. There are many great restaurants and sightseeing available to you. As crowding conditions improve, we will keep you updated. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Many riders are taking Metra's advice.

"My plan is to wait until the lines die down," said commuter Dave Gudewicz. "I may find somewhere to sit for a while and wait for the masses to find their way home."

The CTA added additional service for the parade. The CTA provided extra service morning rush through midday on the Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Pink and Orange lines. CTA warned that multiple bus routes will be detoured in the downtown area as a result of street closures for the celebration and its set up and break-down.
