UPS, FedEx avoid major problems for holiday deliveries

CHICAGO -- Both UPS and FedEx beefed up their operations for the holidays to avoid the delays that marred the 2013 holiday season, and it appears to have worked.

According to shipment tracker ShipMatrix, both FedEx and UPS delivered more than 99 percent of express packages as promised on Dec. 22 and 23.

That was a huge improvement over 2013's delivery problems, which the companies blamed on a mix of bad weather and an overloaded system.
