Gum disease may indicate cancer risk

A study in the journal Lancet found male health professionals with a history of gum disease in a long running study had a 14 percent higher risk of developing cancer. Researchers say after taking in fact increase in lung, kidney, pancreatic and blood cancers.

They say this higher overall risk persisted even in people who had never smoked. Scientists say it's premature to suggest that good oral hygiene has an effect at preventing cancer but that periodontal disease should nevertheless be treated.
