United cancels free meals on some overseas flights

United Airlines says beginning October 1, trips to Europe from Washington's Dulles International Airport will no longer include a free meal for coach passengers.

The airline says it was a difficult, but necessary step to take to curb losses from high fuel prices. Fliers can expect to pay $6 for snack boxes and $9 dollars for salads and sandwiches.

Food in first and business classes will remain free.

United is also eliminating free snacks on North American flights of three hours or less. That begins on September 2.
