Cold virus might help immune system

The common cold virus activates dozens of immune-system genes in the lining of the nose, according to a study in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Researchers also discovered that human rhinovirus 16 stimulates several chemicals in the immune system.

The scientists say the findings are important because they provide a blueprint for developing the ideal cold treatment.

The study was conducted by international researchers, including a team at Proctor and Gamble, the maker of a cold remedy.
