Ill. colleges adjust tuitions

The cost of a college education may be going higher for University of Illinois students. The school's board of trustees meets later this week to consider room and board increases of 8 percent at the UIC campus. A 6 percent increase at the Urbana campus is on the table, as is a lesser amount for the Springfield campus.

There is better news at McHenry County College, where a privately funded program will offer free tuition to some students. Students who complete 32 hours a year of meaningful volunteer service and maintain a "c" average would be eligible for the free tuition program.

And, starting next fall, first-year students from Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky will get the in-state tuition rate at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
