Backyard Shape Up

June 10, 2009 10:15:27 AM PDT
As we move from spring into summer, many of us will be spending more time in our backyards. So it's time to get them in tip-top shape. Lifestyle and design expert Susie Coelho is here to show us how without breaking the bank. Start by cleaning your outdoor space! Get rid of the clutter, deadhead your plants, and trim your trees. After cleaning, pick a focal point just as you would indoors, this creates a dramatic effect. Try adding a green table cloth and 3 vases with flowers

Next start thinking about cutting back on all those services you are currently paying for, such as gardening, window washing or your pool service, or find quicker and easier ways to do them on your own. You can plant your own flowers, clean your own pool or wash your own windows. Susie recommends Windex Outdoor all-in-one glass cleaning tool.

Soften up your outdoor spaces by bringing elements that you would normally think were just for the indoors to the outdoors. Decorative pillows are a great way to bring in color and softness as are rugs and outdoor curtains. Here I have four different styles of outdoor pillows....you can find these anywhere inexpensively these days.

Solar lighting is another trend that can save you money. You can re-create the wonderful lighting just like they have at luxury hotels. Solar is a great way to save money and light up your backyard.

Susie's accessible philosophy and inspiring personality have also made her a favorite choice for on-air style advice. As the host of HGTV's primetime series, "Outer Spaces," she and her team surprised homeowners with beautiful outdoor living spaces. Prior to that, her hit series, "Surprise Gardener," also on HGTV, was a forerunner in the make-over genre. She has also appeared regularly as a lifestyle contributor on numerous network shows including NBC's Today, ABC-TV's The View, and Oprah.

As a best-selling author with four books, she is making her mark in the publishing world. In her Secrets of a Style Diva: A Get-Inspired Guide to Your Creative Side, Susie goes beyond the conventional to give her readers fresh, sassy, and personal advice on how to bring out their creativity. Her Styling for Entertaining: 8 Simple Steps, 8 Miracle Makeovers helps readers create spaces in the four key entertaining areas of the home and garden. Her first book, the best-selling Everyday Styling, sets the tone for her other books and the concept of styling vs. decorating.

Susie's signature global style comes from her East Indian and Portuguese heritage, coupled with her international upbringing in England and France. A true Renaissance woman with international style, she currently lives in the Los Angeles area with her two children.
