Chicago police: crime is down

September 4, 2009 The numbers released on Friday afternoon from august show criminal sexual assault 5.9 percent lower than a year ago.

Homicides dropped 9.2 percent with 31 fewer murders reported so far this year.

There were 50 fewer shootings this summer compared to last summer.

Police department leaders say programs to get more officers on the street are working.

"We are encouraged our anti violence initiatives announced at the beginning of the summer are achieving positive effects, these initiatives include the reassigning of 150 administrative officers to the districts," said Daniel Dugan, deputy police superintendent.

Dugan says Chicago police have seized about 10 percent more illegal weapons in the first 8 months of this year than during the same period last year.
