Woman charged in head scarf-pulling incident pleads guilty

January 5, 2010 (CHICAGO) Valerie Kenney, 54, was sentenced to two years probation and 200 hours of community service.

Kenney was originally charged with a hate crime for the incident which happened at a Jewel grocery store in Tinley Park last November.

Amal Abusumayah received a lot of support from the Muslim community following the incident. She expressed her satisfaction with the outcome following Tuesday's hearing.

"Nobody ever wants anything harsh done to another person…she just made the wrong choice that day. You know, pulling my headscarf, did violate, you know, my religion and my belief, but you know, she got what she deserved," said Abusumayah.

Abusumayah expressed her hope that the experience will encourage Kenney to respect people of all religions.
