The Food and Drug Administration says the highest available dose of the drug Zocor can cause muscle damage and severe and potentially lethal kidney damage.

The FDA says muscle injury is a known side effect with all statins, but the risk is more severe when patients take 80 milligram doses of Zocor.

Zocor is sold by Merck. The generic name is Simvastatin.
