Amount of sleep affects heart health, study says

August 2, 2010 Researchers at the West Virginia School of Medicine studied more than 2,000 participants with some form of heart disease and found those who slept more than nine hours per night had an elevated risk for heart attack or stroke. Also, adults under the age of 60 who slept only five hours a night were three times as likely to experience a heart attack or stroke.

According to the study, those who consistently slept for seven hours every night had the healthiest hearts.

Results of the study appear in the journal "Sleep."
