Niles officer robbed, attacked on way to bank

January 18, 2011 (NILES, Ill.)

The unarmed officer was heading to a bank to deposit village funds Tuesday morning. He was waiting at a stop sign in his village car when one man approached and asked for directions. Then a second man approached with a knife and demanded money. Investigators say other offenders may have also been involved.

The officer was stabbed in the shoulder and pepper-sprayed before the robbers took the deposit bags from his car and fled.

"It's about as brazen as you can get," said Sgt. Robert Tornabene, Niles Police Department.

"It concerns me there are people here…looking to do harm to people," said Roger Plummer, neighborhood resident.

The 53-year-old victim was hospitalized Tuesday night in stable condition.
