City worker killed in car crash

January 22, 2011 (CHICAGO)

It happened about 1:30 a.m. Saturday at 21st and Damen in the Pilsen neighborhood.

Police say a car was westbound on 21st when it struck an SUV headed north on Damen.

Candis Ricks, 29, was driving the SUV. She died from her injuries.

A spokesperson for the Department of Streets and Sanitation says she was working to enforce the city's snow parking ban at the time of the crash.

Family and friends describe Ricks as a beautiful person.

"We're having a hard time with this. Got five boys and one girl -- she was my only girl," said Ricks' mother Brenda Ricks.

"She was just sweet. Candis cared about everybody and a good, good, good heart. Giving person," said Ricks' aunt Gloria Ricks.

The driver of the car was seriously hurt. A passenger is in stable condition.

Police say no charges or citations have been issued in the crash.
