Boy escapes fire at Berwyn apartment

February 17, 2011 (CHICAGO)

According to the Berwyn Fire Department, the teen was transported from the scene to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and shortness of breath. He was reportedly in stable condition.

The fire broke out at approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and was restricted to a unit on the top floor where the 14-year-old was inside. He managed to get himself out of the building on his own.

All units were occupied. The other units suffered smoke and water damage. ABC7 is told the Red Cross is helping to relocate the families.

No one else was hurt in the fire, and there was no word on a cause Thursday morning.

Fire officials say they are investigating.
