Ronald McDonald has been the face of the 'Golden Arches' for almost 50 years.
A company spokesman tells the Bloomberg news service that Ronald is now more an ambassador than a mascot.
Marketing experts say the move was made because McDonald's is shifting its focus from Happy Meals and hamburgers to coffee and salads which appeal to a much older clientele.
